History

Our journey began in 1977 when Tony Blowman, a time served upholsterer and his wife Tricia with her background in admin and finance, set themselves up in small workshop down Empringham Street making and recovering sofas.

After a few years of hard work and dedication, Tonys passion for designing and manufacturing grew and it was soon apparent that they had outgrown the small workshop and needed larger premises that could showcase their designs and growing customer base. They then moved to Boothferry Road and then later Brighton Street.

It wasn't until 1984 that Upholstery Designs finally found a place to set down roots and our showroom has grown into the store it's become today. Our store down Spring Bank West has slowly grown over the last 30 years and is now spread over what was once 4 shops and flats above.

In 1995, their son Ian joined the company doing deliveries on the van, then gradually working his way through the business to where he is today, managing the day to day running of the store. His wife Donna now works alongside him doing the admin and serving customers.

Now in 2021 we continue to put our heart and passion into maintaining the reputation we have built over the years by being extremely selective of what we stock and designing and consulting with many of our manufacturers. We are not willing to compromise on quality and every Sofa and chair that comes through our warehouse is hand checked by our dedicated staff to ensure that our high standards are constantly maintained and you can be confident that you will receive a beautiful piece of furniture.
